Privacy Policy
Last updated November 3, 2026
Your picture never passes through our servers. It goes straight from your computer to your phone or tablet, encrypted, over your own network or a link you choose. The Tethery software collects nothing for advertising. Our website, tethery.app, uses analytics and advertising tools, which you can turn down.
Who we are
Tethery is made by Sonder Media House, LLC ("Sonder", "we", "us"). We are the controller of the personal data described here. Write to us about anything on this page at support@tethery.app.
This policy covers tethery.app, connect.tethery.app, your Tethery account, and the parts of the Tethery software that talk to our servers. It does not cover Adobe, Apple, Google, Tailscale or any other company whose products you use with Tethery.
What we collect, and why
When you buy
Your name, your email address, what you bought, the price, the currency, any promotion code, and Stripe's references for the payment, including your receipt. Stripe collects your card details and billing address; we never see your card number.
Why: to send your license key, let you sign in to your account, answer support questions, and keep the accounts and tax records the law requires. Legal basis: performing our contract with you, and our legal obligations for tax and accounting records.
Your account
Your account is found by your email address. When you sign in we email you a one-time link. Until it is used or expires we keep a scrambled copy of it with your email address, and once you use it we set one cookie that keeps you signed in for up to seven days.
Why: so you can see your license key, your receipt and the computers using your license. Legal basis: performing our contract with you.
When you activate a license
A fingerprint of your computer and the name your computer gives itself, such as "Studio iMac". The fingerprint is a one-way hash of the computer's hardware identifier, not the identifier itself, so it cannot be turned back into the identifier. We also keep when each computer was activated, and a copy of the license file issued to it, which carries your name and email address. While Tethery is open on a computer that is online, it renews the license about once a day by sending us the license file, which names the computer by the same fingerprint; we keep nothing new from it.
Why: so a license covers two computers and no more, so your account can list them, and so a refunded license or a deactivated computer stops renewing. Legal basis: performing our contract with you, and our legitimate interest in stopping a license from being shared.
Update checks
Once a day the Tethery panel asks tethery.app whether a newer version exists, saying which version you have and whether it is running in Premiere Pro or After Effects. That request is recorded in our server logs like any other.
Why: to tell you about updates. Legal basis: performing our contract with you.
When you use the online link
connect.tethery.app introduces your phone to your computer when the two cannot reach each other directly. Every session registers with it, on the free version too. When a session starts, your computer sends it the session's local network address, which it does not keep, and, if you have one, your license file, which carries your name, your email address and the computer's fingerprint, so it can check the license. It then passes the connection handshake between the two devices, which includes the network addresses the devices can be reached on. The viewer page and the phone's requests to your computer pass through it too: the page your computer serves (on the free version, our own copy of it), and the readings your phone sends it, such as frame rate and network timing. It never carries the picture or the sound.
The relay keeps a session in memory only while it runs. Like the rest of our servers, it records each request in our server logs (below), and for the relay those records include the session code, a temporary session pass, and the random id of the phone's viewer page, which are part of the addresses the phone asks for. The pass stops working when the session ends.
Legal basis: performing our contract with you, and for the free version, our legitimate interest in providing the service you asked for.
Session notifications
If you turn on Notify me when a session starts on your phone, your phone's notification subscription is kept on your own computer, not by us. When a session starts, your computer sends the notification through your browser's push service, which is run by Apple, Google or Mozilla, depending on the browser. The notification is encrypted to your phone. We never see it, and we keep no list of subscriptions.
When you join the waitlist, or send yourself the download link
Before launch, you can leave your email address to hear when Tethery is available. After launch, on a phone, you can have the download link emailed to you, to open on your computer. We keep the address you type, when you first and last asked, and how many times. When you give it as you download Tethery, or download from the link we emailed you, we also keep which installer you downloaded, Mac or Windows, its version, and how many times you downloaded. If you agree to news and offers, we also keep that you agreed, and when. Before launch, each address is also sent to our support inbox.
Why: to email you what you asked for, and to know who is interested in Tethery. If you agreed to news, we also use the address to write to you about Tethery. Legal basis: taking the steps you asked for, and our legitimate interest in knowing who is interested in the product. For news and offers, your consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time with the unsubscribe link in any of those emails, or by writing to us.
Visitors whose browser is set to a time zone in Europe or Canada see an unchecked box for news, and are only sent news if they check it.
When a creator sends you
Some creators who recommend Tethery are paid a share of the sales they bring. If you arrive through a creator's link, such as tethery.app/name, we count the visit for that creator as a number, keeping nothing about you with it. If you then download Tethery and give your email address, we keep which creator sent you, and when, with your address. If you buy within 60 days, or use a creator's code, we keep which creator the sale is credited to and what they earn from it. Creators are told how many visits, downloads and sales they brought, never who you are.
Why: to pay the people who recommend Tethery for the sales they bring. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in paying them fairly.
When you write to us
Your email address and whatever you send, including any diagnostics you paste. The panel's Copy diagnostics text leaves out your session code and link, so pasting it does not let anyone watch your session.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you, and performing our contract with you if you have a license.
When you send a report from the panel
If you press Send a report in the Tethery panel, it sends us what Tethery knows about your session: the versions of Tethery and your app, your license's ID if you have one, the settings and addresses Tethery is using, what each connected device reports, the end of Tethery's log, anything you write, and the email address you give for our reply. The panel remembers that address on your computer for your next report. It leaves out your session code, links and license key, and replaces your home folder's name with ~. Nothing is sent unless you press the button.
Why: to find out what went wrong and help you fix it. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you, and performing our contract with you if you have a license.
Server logs
Like any website, our servers record each request: your IP address, the address asked for, the time, and your browser's description of itself. Links from the Tethery panel and the phone carry ?from=panel or ?from=phone, so we can count how people arrive. No cookie is used for that. To stop abuse, our servers also count recent requests per IP address and per email address, in memory, for up to an hour.
Once a day we count, from those records, how Tethery was used the day before: how many computers checked for updates or renewed a license, how many sessions started, and how many phones connected over the online link. We keep only the totals. They hold no IP address and nothing else about any one person or computer.
Why: to keep the service running, find faults, stop abuse, and understand how Tethery is used. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure service and improving it.
What stays on your devices
The Tethery software keeps its logs, your license file, your notification subscriptions and the names you give your devices on your own computer. None of it is sent to us unless you send it yourself, by email or with Send a report. The viewer page on your phone remembers a random device id, so the free version can tell one device from another, and tells your computer which system and browser it runs on, so the panel can tell your devices apart. Both are used on your own network or through the relay, and we keep them only in the relay's server logs described above.
When a session starts, the panel tells our relay which version of Tethery it is, which app and which kind of computer, and while the session runs, how many devices are watching. The relay holds this in memory only while the session runs, so we can see how many people are using Tethery right now. It is never written down, and never includes who is watching.
The Tethery software, the panel and the viewer page on your phone contain no analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.
Analytics and advertising on tethery.app
tethery.app uses tools from Google and Meta to understand how people find and use the site, to measure our advertising, and to show our ads to people who have visited it (retargeting). These may include Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads and the Meta Pixel. They use cookies and similar technology, and send Google and Meta the pages you visit, how you arrived, the ads you saw or clicked, actions such as starting a download or a purchase (never card details), your IP address, and your device and browser. Google and Meta may connect this with what they already know about you, under their own privacy policies.
When you buy, our server also tells Google Analytics what you bought and what it cost, so we can see which visits lead to a sale. It does so only if your choice allowed these tools on the page where you bought, and it sends your Google Analytics cookie's identifier with the purchase, never your name, email address or card.
Under the same choice, our server tells Meta about the purchase too, through Meta's Conversions API, so we can see which of our ads lead to a sale. It sends what you bought and what it cost, the Meta Pixel's cookie identifiers, your IP address, your browser's description, and your email address and country in scrambled form (a one-way hash), which Meta uses only to match the purchase to an account. It never sends your name or card.
We also use Google Search Console, which tells us in aggregate which searches lead to tethery.app. It sets no cookie on your device.
Your choice. In the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and wherever else the law requires it, these tools only load if you accept them in the cookie banner, and you can change your mind at any time from Your privacy choices at the foot of every page. Elsewhere they load when you visit, and Your privacy choices turns them off. We treat a browser's Global Privacy Control signal as turning them off.
Why: to see what works on the site and in our ads, and to reach people who have shown interest. Legal basis: your consent where it is required, and otherwise our legitimate interest in promoting Tethery.
Cookies and similar technology
Always: tethery.app sets one cookie of its own, and only when you sign in to your account. It keeps you signed in for up to seven days, and it is strictly necessary for the account to work. The page also remembers in your browser whether you paused its motion, and your privacy choices. These stay in your browser.
With your choice: the analytics and advertising tools above set their own cookies, as described there. If you arrived through a creator's link, tethery.app also sets one cookie of its own, which remembers which creator for 60 days. Without your choice, the creator is remembered only in the address of the pages you move between.
Stripe: pages that show prices load Stripe's script, which Stripe uses to take payments and prevent fraud, and which can contact Stripe before you choose to buy. Stripe's privacy policy covers it.
Our fonts are served from tethery.app itself, so they tell no other company that you visited.
How long we keep it
- Purchases and licenses: for as long as the license exists, then seven years for tax and accounting records.
- Activations: until you deactivate the computer, or the license ends.
- Sign-in links: until used, or until they expire.
- Waitlist and download-link requests: until 24 months after you last asked. If you agreed to news, until you unsubscribe.
- Support email: up to three years after the conversation ends.
- Reports sent from the panel: 90 days.
- Server logs, the relay's included: 30 days.
- Daily usage totals, and each creator's daily visits and downloads: kept, since they hold nothing about anyone.
- Which creator sent you: as long as the address or purchase it is kept with.
- Relay sessions: in memory while the session runs.
- Analytics and advertising data: Google Analytics keeps it for up to 14 months; Google and Meta keep advertising data under their own policies.
Who else handles it
We use these companies to run Tethery. Each handles your data only to provide its service to us, under a data processing agreement:
- Google Cloud (Google LLC), which hosts tethery.app and connect.tethery.app, stores our license records and keeps our server logs, in the United States.
- Resend, which sends our email.
- Squarespace, our domain registrar, which forwards email sent to tethery.app addresses to our inbox.
- Google Workspace (Google LLC), where we read and answer it.
Stripe (Stripe, LLC and its affiliates) is the seller of record for your purchase: it takes the payment, collects and remits sales tax and VAT, and handles your payment data as a controller under its own privacy policy.
Google (Google LLC) and Meta (Meta Platforms, Inc. and Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd.) receive the analytics and advertising data described above, and use it under their own terms and privacy policies as well as to provide their services to us.
We may also disclose data when the law requires it, to protect our rights or someone's safety, or to a buyer if the business is sold, in which case this policy continues to apply.
We do not sell your personal information for money. Letting Google and Meta collect data on tethery.app for advertising counts as "sharing" it for targeted advertising under some US state laws, and you can turn that off as described above.
International transfers
We are in the United States, and so are our servers and most of the companies above. If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, your data is transferred to the United States. Where a company is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (and its UK and Swiss extensions), we rely on that. Otherwise we rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, and the UK's addendum to them.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to support@tethery.app from the address the data is under. We answer within one month, and usually much sooner. We may keep purchase records the law requires us to keep, and we will tell you if we do.
In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, the GDPR and its UK and Swiss equivalents also give you the right to restrict how we use your data, to receive it in a portable format, and to object to our use of it on the basis of legitimate interests. You can also withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what was done before. You may complain to the data protection authority where you live or work. We would rather you came to us first, so we can put it right.
In California and other US states with privacy laws, you have the right to know what we collect and how we use it (this page), and to access, correct and delete it. You also have the right to opt out of the sale of your personal information, its sharing for targeted advertising, and profiling. We do not sell it or use it for profiling with legal or similarly significant effects. To opt out of sharing for targeted advertising, use Your privacy choices at the foot of any page of tethery.app, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser. We will not treat you differently for using any of these rights. You may use an authorized agent, and we may ask to confirm your request from your email address.
Security
Our sites use HTTPS only. Your license key is never stored in the license file on your computer, and never logged by the panel. Sign-in is by a one-time emailed link, so there is no password to steal. Access to our records is limited to the people who run Tethery. If a breach puts your data at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
Tethery is for professionals and is not meant for children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you think a child has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will say so on this page, and email customers before it takes effect.
